Department of Architecture and Design

To study "architecture and design" as a comprehensive academic discipline that integrates the humanities, science and engineering, and the arts.

Features of the Department

The Department of Architecture and Design in the Faculty of Architecture and Design, which will be established in April 2024, aims to develop highly specialized students who can understand and design the “environment” that encompasses people's lives, including housing, architecture and cities, while adhering to the traditional educational policy of the Department of Housing and Architecture, the Faculty of Human Sciences and Design: “thinking from the users’ and residents’ points of view.”

The department cultivates highly specialized students who can comprehensively understand the living environment from housing to the city, from the perspectives of housing and architectural studies, and design inclusive and harmonious living environments. Students will develop skills to think logically about living environments both in Japan and abroad from various aspects, including history, region, technology, sustainability and social trends. Based on the knowledge gained, they will cultivate abilities to design harmonious living environments with creativity and expression. Through these studies, students aim to be active in various fields such as architectural design, interior design and urban development.

Students can learn the fundamentals of architectural design through specialized subjects such as "Design and Drawing" to learn basic drawing methods and "Shape and Design" to improve their modeling sensibilities. In the "Architectural Design Studio" subject from the second year onward, students will develop the ability to propose architectural designs that are related to local and social issues by gradually increasing the scale of their projects, from small housing complexes to community facilities and district development plans. They can also acquire a wide range of design skills through related subjects such as “Interior Design” and “Computer Design.”

Students will learn architectural design from the first year through the study of basic subjects, which are compulsory for all students. In the “Introduction to Specialized Subjects,” first year students will comprehensively learn the basic knowledge of the six core fields of the Faculty of Architecture and Design (architectural design, living, planning, history, structure and construction methods, building environment & facilities) to gain an overview of architectural design studies and acquire the common language for the specialized fields. Students will then selectively take specialized subjects from applied subjects according to their own interests, and establish their own specialization in a step-by-step manner.

The advanced subjects, which provide a variety of learning opportunities with an eye on future career paths, are a group of elective subjects to extend the abilities and increase the specialized skills of the student according to their own personality and aptitude. Highly-specialized “practical seminars,” which are related to urban development, conservation and recovery of buildings, structural design, etc., are also offered. There are many opportunities for group work and presentations to improve communication skills, and through workshops in cooperation with overseas universities and organizations and "English for Architecture" classes, students will develop a vitality that will enable them to be active globally.

No matter which subjects from the field of architectural study students choose, they will be qualified to take the examination for 1st-class Kenchikushi upon graduation.
