The development of women's higher education based on character-building

In the era that Japan Women's University was founded during the year 1901, there was inequality between men and women in every aspect of life. It was a time in which general understanding of higher education for women was extraordinarily low. Against the background of that day and age Jinzo Naruse, who founded the University, the first women's higher educational institution, strove to enrich the development of the University as a model of women's higher education based on character-building.

Founding spirit

Our founder, Jinzo Naruse

Educate women as human beings
Educate women as women
Educate women as citizens

In order to achieve a society in which the individual is respected and women play an active part

A society in which the individual is respected, in which this fact leads to the awareness of the characteristics of the society and culture of other nations and races, and international cooperation and the establishment of peace are sought. It is toward the realization of this sort of society that the University will continue to boldly progress, in order that now and in the future women play the roles that are increasingly expected of them.
