Diploma Policy
The Department of Architecture and Design in the Faculty of Architecture and Design aims to nurture highly specialized professionals who can comprehensively understand the living environment from the perspective of housing and architecture, ranging from housing to city, and who can design rich environments that encompass residential life. Specifically, the department trains students to logically understand domestic and international living environments from the aspects of history, regional characteristics, art, technology, sustainability and other social issues, and to design rich living environments based on these insights with creativity and expressiveness. To this end, the diploma policy of the department is to acquire the following abilities.
- DP 1. Students will have specialized knowledge of housing, architecture, communities and cities, and be able to understand and consider appropriate living environments from a broad and global perspective. [University DP 1, 3, 4]
- DP 2. Students will have the skills necessary to logically analyze and design housing, communities and cities, understand issues related to living environments from the standpoints of diverse people, and design rich living environments with creativity to solve such issues. [University DP 1, 2, 3]
- DP 3. Students will be able to conduct studies, research and design while also using knowledge and methodologies of natural science and information processing technology, and will be able to logically explain, present and discuss their results and proposals. [University DP2, 3]
- DP 4. Students will be able to work independently, continuously, systematically, and cooperatively.
Curriculum Policy
The subjects taken by the students of the Department of Architecture and Design are organized in accordance with the following curriculum policy so that they can achieve the department's diploma policy upon graduation.
Lectures, seminars and practical training subjects are offered in the fields of architecture and design, life, planning, history, structure and construction, and building environment & facilities in order for students to acquire specialized knowledge and skills in architecture and design.
Overseas training in architecture, workshops with overseas universities and other subjects that develop students’ international awareness are offered.
Practical seminars are offered to cultivate students’ ability to analyze specific issues related to housing and architecture, communities and cities, propose (design) and express creative and effective solutions to those issues, and explain, present and discuss them logically, by integrating the acquired knowledge.
Lectures and seminars are offered for students to acquire design, analysis, and analytical methods using information processing technology.
Experiments, seminars, and practical design training subjects are offered to cultivate students’ ability to work independently, continuously, systematically and cooperatively.
The Subjects of the department are composed of the following subject groups: “Architecture and Design,” “Life,” “Planning,” “History,” “Structure and Construction,” and “Building Environment & Facilities.” The curriculum is designed to allow students to establish specialized knowledge and skills in stages according to their aptitude, from compulsory basic subjects (common) to applied subjects (compulsory elective) and advanced subjects (elective).
In the specialized introductory subjects within the basic subjects, students will acquire a comprehensive basic knowledge of the six fields that form the core of the Faculty of Architecture and Design from their first year, to grasp the overall picture of architecture and design studies and to acquire common terms.
In the third year, students can freely choose from a wide range of highly specialized and practical seminars on community planning, building preservation and regeneration, structural design, etc. are offered. In the third year, students can freely choose from a wide range of courses, with an eye toward their own future career.
Subjects for the achievement of learning outcomes
- DP 1. Basic subjects (lectures, seminars, and practical training subjects in architecture and design) in each field related to architecture and design (Architecture and Design, Life, Planning, History, Structure and Construction, Building Environment & Facilities), specialized subjects in English and architectural practical training subjects in cooperation with overseas universities, etc. to cultivate internationality
- DP 2. Applied subjects (lectures, seminars, and practical training subjects in architecture and design) to cultivate advanced knowledge and skills in various fields related to architecture and design, as well as subjects related to graduation theses/projects.
- DP 3. Advanced subjects (lectures, seminars, and practical training subjects in architecture and design) to cultivate practical knowledge and skills in various fields related to architecture and design, as well as subjects related to graduation theses/projects.
- DP 4. Seminars and subjects related to graduation theses/projects to work on practical issues in each field related to architecture and design.
Admission Policy
The Department of Architecture and Design in the Faculty of Architecture and Design aims to nurture highly specialized professionals who can comprehensively understand the living environment from the perspective of housing and architecture, ranging from housing to cities, and who can design rich environments that encompass residential life.
The department seeks the following types of students.
The types of students the department is seeking
- Students who are interested and motivated in logically understanding domestic and international living environments from the aspects of history, regional characteristics, art, technology, sustainability and other social issues, and designing rich living environments based on these insights with creativity and expressiveness.
Academic skills to be mastered by the high school level
- Basic academic skills necessary to understand and think scientifically and logically about the various aspects of housing and architecture through subjects (Foreign Language (English), Japanese, Mathematics, Science, etc.) [Knowledge and Skills].
- Ability to actively express their own thoughts and views on various issues in housing, architecture, communities and cities [Logical thinking, judgement and expressive abilities, etc.]
- Volition to acquire specialized knowledge and skills related to housing, architecture, communities and cities and to work independently, continuously, systematically and cooperatively in proposing comfortable living environments and architectural and urban design from the standpoint of residents and users. [Attitude towards independent learning]
Based on the following basic policy, an entrance examination is conducted to judge whether applicants have acquired the above academic skills.
- General entrance examination
In the general entrance examination, it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic knowledge in the subjects required for each entrance examination category, taking into account their logical thinking, expressive abilities and attitude towards learning.
- General entrance examination (individual examination)
In the written examination, it will be judged whether applicants have acquired the basic skills necessary to understand and think scientifically and logically about the various aspects of housing and architecture through the subjects (Japanese, Foreign Language (English), Mathematics, Science, etc.) studied up to high school.
Applicants’ basic academic skills in (i) Japanese, (ii) a Foreign Language (English), (iii) Mathematics and (iv) Science (physics), all of which are fundamental to the study of architecture and design, will be evaluated to determine whether or not students have passed. - General entrance examination (using an external English examination)
In the written examination, it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic skills necessary to understand and think scientifically and logically about the various aspects of housing and architecture through the subjects (Japanese, Foreign Language (English), Mathematics, Science, etc.) studied up to high school.
Emphasis is placed on the level of retention of the four skills of a foreign language (English), and applicants are required to have achieved a certain score on an external English examination. In addition, their basic academic skills in (i) Japanese, (ii) Mathematics and (iii) Science (physics) will be evaluated to determine pass/fail decisions. - eneral entrance examination (1st round examination (three-subject type or four-subject type) using the Common Test for University Admissions)
Using the results of the Common Test for University Admissions, it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic skills necessary to understand and think scientifically and logically about the various aspects of housing and architecture through the subjects (Japanese, Foreign Language (English), Mathematics, Science, etc.) studied up to high school.
In particular, evaluation will be made on basic academic skills in the subjects designated for the examination (Japanese, a Foreign Language, Geography/History and Civics, Mathematics and Science). - General entrance examination (1st round examination (five-subject type) using the Common Test for University Admissions)
Using the results of the Common Test for University Admissions, it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic skills necessary to understand and think scientifically and logically about the various aspects of housing and architecture through the subjects (Japanese, Foreign Language (English), Mathematics, Science, etc.) studied up to high school.
In particular, evaluation will be made on basic academic skills in the subjects designated for the examination (Japanese, a Foreign Language, Geography/History and Civics, Mathematics and Science). - General entrance examination (2nd round examination using the Common Test for University Admissions)
Using the results of the Common Test for University Admissions, it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic skills necessary to understand and think scientifically and logically about the various aspects of housing and architecture through the subjects (Japanese, Foreign Language (English), Mathematics, Science, etc.) studied up to high school.
In particular, evaluation will be made on basic academic skills in the subjects designated for the examination (Foreign Language,Mathematics and Science).
- General entrance examination (individual examination)
- Comprehensive entrance examination
Through the review of application documents it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic skills necessary to understand and think scientifically and logically about the various aspects of housing and architecture through the subjects (Japanese, Foreign Language (English), Mathematics, Science, etc.) studied up to high school.
In addition, their expressive ability (descriptive and writing skills) will be comprehensively evaluated in the “Spatial Expression” examination and verbalization skills in an oral examination. These will be used to judge whether they have the ability to actively express their own thoughts and views on various issues in the fields of housing, architecture, communities and cities, and whether they have a volition to acquire specialized knowledge and skills related to these fields, and to work independently, continuously, systematically and cooperatively in proposing comfortable living environments and architectural and urban design from the standpoint of residents and users. - Entrance examination by recommendation
Applicants recommended by the principal of a high school, etc. will be judged to have the basic academic skills that should have been acquired by the end of high school. In addition, through the review of application documents and an interview (oral examination), applicants' motivation for study and research, ability to express themselves, communication skills, and cooperativeness will be comprehensively judged.
- Entrance examination by recommendation (from Senior High School affiliated with JWU)
Applicants recommended by the principal of the Senior High School affiliated with JWU will be comprehensively judged on their "academic skills to be mastered by the high school level" based on the application documents and interview. - Entrance examination by recommendation (from designated schools/partner schools)
Applicants recommended by the principal of the high school designated by the department (designated school/partner school) will be comprehensively judged on their "academic skills to be mastered by the high school level" based on the application documents (including a preliminary assignment) and interview (oral examination). - Entrance examination by recommendation (general recommendation)
Based on application documents, applicants recommended by the principal of a high school will be evaluated to ascertain whether or not they have the basic academic skills necessary to understand and think about various elements related to housing and architecture in a scientific and logical manner through the subjects (Japanese, Foreign Language (English), Mathematics, Science, etc.) studied up to high school. In addition, the logical thinking and expressive abilities of applicants will be evaluated through an essay, and their communication and expressive skills as well as the ability to participate in discussions with others through an oral examination, based upon which comprehensive judgements will be made.
- Entrance examination by recommendation (from Senior High School affiliated with JWU)
- International students
Applicants will be judged on whether they have sufficient basic academic skills necessary to study architecture and design through the foreign language proficiency test (TOEFL/TOEIC) scores and the examination of three subjects (“Japan as a Foreign Language,” “Japan and the World” and “Mathematics (Course 2)”) of Examination for Japanese University Admission (EJU).
The application documents and oral examination will be used to judge their volition to acquire specialized knowledge and skills relating to housing, architecture, communities and cities, Japanese language ability to accurately express their own thoughts and views, and communication skills. - Transfer and bachelor's admission
For those who have graduated from universities, junior colleges, and technical colleges (including prospective graduates), and those who are currently enrolled in other universities, written examinations in essay, mathematics, and drawing will be conducted. Using the written examination results and the application documents (including the foreign language proficiency test score), applicants’ academic and expressive abilities necessary to study architecture and design will be evaluated.
In addition, an oral examination will be conducted to judge their volition to acquire specialized knowledge and skills relating to housing, architecture, communities and cities, and communication skills to accurately express their own thoughts and views.
