The Division of English has three specialized fields: British and American Literature, British and American Area Studies, and English Language Studies (linguistics). Each works in a complementary way to nurture human resources with the qualities and capabilities to broaden their interests in a wide range of fields in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. The Division is also making efforts to develop not only faculty members, but also high school English teachers and other professionals who use English in their jobs.

The Division of English aims to cultivate a wide range of academic knowledge in British literature, British cultural studies, American literature, American studies, English language studies and related fields, as well as to develop students who conduct advanced research and education in their respective fields of specialization.
