Three Policies of the Division of English

Diploma Policy (Master's Program)

Knowledge and understanding

  • Students will have extensive knowledge of British literature, British cultural studies, American literature, American studies, English linguistics and related fields.

Thinking and judgment

  • Students will be able to think logically and to pursue various issues related to literature, history, language and culture in the English-speaking world, centering on the United Kingdom and the United States.
  • Students will be able to exercise objective judgment and a sound critical spirit in order to analyze the subject of research.

Interest, volition, attitude

  • Students will have a great interest in various issues in literature, history, language, and culture in the English-speaking world, centering on the United Kingdom and the United States.
  • Students will have a positive attitude to contribute to society at large by making use of advanced English language skills and in-depth specialized knowledge in the field of education, etc., .

Skills and expressions

  • Students will be able to read and understand highly specialized literature and materials in English and to collect information.
  • Students will be able to express personal ideas and disseminate them widely through English papers.
  • Students will be able to think logically and express themselves to accurately convey their thoughts to others.

Curriculum Policy (Master's Program)

Knowledge and understanding

  • Lectures are offered to enable students to acquire more advanced specialized knowledge in literature, history, language, and culture of the English-speaking world, centering on the United Kingdom and the United States.

Thinking and judgment

  • Seminars are offered to cultivate students' ability to read and understand papers in their specialized field of study and to discover issues on their own.
  • The “Special Research” classes are offered for the completion of a master's thesis that meets the standard stipulated in the University's degree regulations.

Interest, volition, attitude

  • The Division encourages students to actively present the results of their research by submitting articles to the University's academic journals (Veritas, Graduate School Bulletin, etc.) and by making oral presentations at the Graduate School English Division Council.
  • Active learning is emphasized in all subjects.

Skills and expressions

  • The Division train students to communicate their research orally and clearly at the research presentations of the Graduate School English Division Council and at the master's thesis interim presentation meeting.
  • Since students write their master's thesis in English, "English Thesis Writing - Advanced" subjects are offered to enable students to learn how to write research papers in English.
  • Relevant subjects are offered to cultivate personnel to be engaged in English education.

Admission Policy (Master's Program)

Knowledge and understanding

  • Students who have a certain level of expertise in at least one of the following areas: British literature, British cultural studies, American literature, American studies, or English linguistics.

Thinking and judgment

  • Students who have a multifaceted perspective and the ability to make objective judgments.

Interest, volition, attitude

  • Students who want to contribute to the development of society by acquiring advanced expertise in the literature, history, language, and culture of the English-speaking world, centering on the United Kingdom and the United States.

Skills and expressions

  • Students who have a certain level of English proficiency to accurately read and understand academic books and articles in English in their field of their expertise.
  • Students who have the ability to collect knowledge and information and systematically compile them.

Diploma Policy (Doctoral Program)

Knowledge and understanding

  • Students will have advanced and specialized knowledge in British literature, British cultural studies, American literature, American studies, English linguistics and related fields.

Thinking and judgment

  • Students will be able to present original ideas through their own thinking and analytical skills in the specialized fields of British literature, British cultural studies, American literature, American studies and English linguistics.

Interest, volition, attitude

  • Students will have a willingness to raise questions and pursue their own research on various issues in literature, history, language, and culture in the English-speaking world, centering on the United Kingdom and the United States.
  • Students will have a proactive attitude to contribute to the development of their specialized field of study with their advanced English proficiency and in-depth specialized knowledge.

Skills and expressions

  • Students will have logical thinking, expression and English language skills to organize unique thoughts obtained through reached in a doctoral dissertation.

Curriculum Policy (Doctoral Program)

Knowledge and understanding

  • Lectures are offered to enable students to acquire more advanced specialized knowledge in the humanities with a focus on the English-speaking world.

Thinking and judgment

  • Seminars are offered to cultivate students' ability to read and understand papers in their specialized field of study and to discover issues on their own.
  • The "Advanced Researches” classes are offered to provide students with individual guidance so that they can acquire appropriate information gathering and problem-solving methods required for writing the dissertation.

Interest, volition, attitude

  • The Division encourages students to submit papers to academic journals of public academic societies and the University's Graduate School Bulletin.
  • The Division encourages students to actively present their research findings at public conferences, oral presentations at the Graduate School English Division Council, etc.
  • Active learning is emphasized in all subjects.

  • The "Research for Doctor's Degree" classes are offered to provide students with individual guidance for writing a dissertation.
