Three Policies of the Division of History

Diploma Policy (Master's Program)

Knowledge and understanding

  • Students will have a broad knowledge of Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields, and will be able to acquire knowledge sufficient to earn their master's degree in a specialized field.

Thinking and judgment

  • Students will be able to explore and examine Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields objectively, logically, and systematically with a global point of view and a scientific critical spirit and insight.

Interest, volition, attitude

  • Students will have a deep interest in Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields, be highly motivated in their own research and be able to pursue research activities.

Skills and expressions

  • Students will be able to collect information, read and analyze a wide variety of historical documents related to history.
  • Students will have the ability to express themselves accurately and richly, to understand various events in the contemporary world from a historical perspective, to communicate effectively, to disseminate their own ideas, and to contribute to society at large.

Curriculum Policy (Master's Program)

Knowledge and understanding

  • Lectures are offered to enable students to acquire specialized knowledge and understanding of Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields.

Thinking and judgment

  • Seminars are offered to cultivate students’ ability to discover issues on their own, derive methods for solving them and develop their thinking skills.

Interest, volition, attitude

  • Specialized subjects are offered to increase students’ interest in Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields and to motivate them to explore research topics.
  • Seminars that promote active learning are offered.

Skills and expressions

  • Specialized subjects are offered to cultivate the students’ ability to present their research topics and results using their specialized knowledge and skills.
  • Students are required to write a master's thesis that meets the standards set forth in the University's degree regulations under individual guidance and based on a research plan.

Admission Policy (Master's Program)

Knowledge and understanding

  • Students who have a desire to contribute to society by further deepening their specialized knowledge and understanding of Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields.

Thinking and judgment

  • Students who want to deepen their contemplation of people, history, and society, and to think about their own way of life, the ideal state of society and the future through thinking and judging about Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields.

Interest, volition, attitude

  • Students who want to contribute to society by determining their own issues and conducting research in the fields of Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields.

Skills and expressions

  • Students who want to contribute to society in various fields after completing the program by making use of the specialized knowledge and skills acquired in the Division.

Diploma Policy (Doctoral Program)

Knowledge and understanding

  • Students will have a deep and broad knowledge of Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields, and will be able to acquire academic knowledge sufficient to earn their doctoral degree.

Thinking and judgment

  • Students will be able to further develop the investigative, analytical and reflective skills developed in master’s program, and will be able to conduct unique and independent research activities with a global perspective.

Interest, volition, attitude

  • Based on a deep interest in their research in the master's program, students will have a strong desire to continue and maintain research activities and to further deepen their research.

Skills and expressions

  • Students will be able to read and understand specialized historical materials on Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields, and to present research results with accurate expression and communication skills, and to contribute to academic development

Curriculum Policy (Doctoral Program)

Knowledge and understanding

  • Subjects are offered to enable students to acquire highly specialized knowledge and understanding of Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields.

Thinking and judgment

  • Subjects are offered to cultivate students’ ability to discover issues on their own, derive methods for solving them, develop their thinking skills and summarize them.

Interest, volition, attitude

  • Specialized subjects are offered to increase students' specialized interest and motivation in Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields
  • Seminars that promote active learning are offered.
  • The Division encourages students to actively present their research findings through oral presentations at public academic conferences, submissions to academic journals, etc.

Skills and expressions

  • Subjects are offered to enable students to acquire specialized knowledge and skills, and to improve their ability to present and communicate their research topics.
  • As the culmination of their own research, students are required to write a doctoral dissertation that meets the standards set forth in the University's degree regulations under guidance based on a research plan.

Admission Policy (Doctoral Program)

Knowledge and understanding

  • Students who can contribute to the development of academics using the specialized knowledge acquired in the master’s program.

Thinking and judgment

  • Students who want to deepen their thoughts obtained through the research of Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and related fields and to gain deeper insight into how to work and live as a researcher and future society.
  • Students who seek to earn their degree by deepening their academic thinking.

Interest, volition, attitude

  • Students who want to continue their advanced and original research based on the expertise and research methods developed in the master’s program.

Skills and expressions

  • Students who aim for a career in research or education and wan to contribute to society by applying the skills learned in the Division.
