Three Policies of the Graduate School of Humanities

Diploma Policy (Master's Program)

  • Students will have a broad knowledge of the humanities and advanced skills in their field of specialization.
  • Students will be able to pursue various issues related to the humanities in depth, with a scientific and critical mind and deep insight.
  • Students will be able to read and understand highly specialized literature and materials in the humanities and present their research results with accurate expression and communication skills.
  • Students will be able to contribute to society at large with comprehensive judgment and creative research skills, making use of their specialized knowledge and skills in the humanities.

Curriculum Policy (Master's Program)

  • Lectures are offered to enable students to acquire more advanced expertise in the humanities.
  • Seminars are offered to enable students to learn how to find issues and solve them.
  • Subjects are offered in the various fields of each division to enable students to deepen their specialized studies.
  • Students are required to write a master's thesis that meets the standards set forth in the JWU Degree Regulations under individual guidance.

Admission Policy (Master's Program)

  • Students who want to conduct research in one of the following fields: Japanese (Japanese literature, Japanese linguistics, Japanese language education, Chinese classics, library science), English (British literature, British cultural studies, American literature, American studies, English linguistics), History (Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history).
  • Students who have a desire to contribute to society with advanced expertise in the humanities.

Diploma Policy (Doctoral Program)

  • Students will have a broad knowledge of the humanities and acquire advanced academic knowledge in a specialized field sufficient to earn their doctoral degree.
  • Students will be able to conduct original and independent research activities by further developing the research, analysis, and observational skills developed in the master’s Program.
  • Students will be able to read and understand highly specialized literature and materials on the humanities, and present research results with accurate expression and communication skills.
  • Students will be able to contribute to society at large with comprehensive judgment and creative research skills, using specialized knowledge and skills in the humanities.

Curriculum Policy (Doctoral Program)

  • As the culmination of research in each specialized field, students are required to write a doctoral dissertation that meets the standards set forth in the JWU Degree Regulations under guidance based on a research plan.

Admission Policy (Doctoral Program)

  • Students who want to continue their advanced and original research based on the expertise and research methodologies developed in the master’s Program.
