Three Policies of the Department of Clothing (from the 2024 academic year)

Diploma Policy

The Department of Clothing aims to cultivate people who can contribute to the realization of an enriched and fulfilling human life and to the solution of various problems in our lives. To this end, students are encouraged to acquire knowledge, skills and ways of thinking that contribute to the creation of clothing and clothing in life from a scientific perspective through the study of a wide range of specialist areas related to clothing. The educational objectives of the department are to acquire the following abilities.

  • DP 1: Students will be able to acquire knowledge, skills, and thinking in a wide range of specialized areas in clothing science, and apply them to understand and explain new findings related to clothing and clothing life in a scientific manner. [University DP 1]
  • DP 2: Students will be able to collect, systematically analyze and organize information and data related to various issues in clothing and clothing life. [University DP 2]
  • DP 3: Students will be able to discover various problems and issues in human life, address them in a scientific and creative manner, and disseminate the results appropriately. [University DP 2 , 3]
  • DP 4: Students will come to maintain a deep interest in people, society, nature and the environment, and a volition to contribute to improving the quality of people's lives through clothing. [University DP 4, 5]

Curriculum Policy

Curriculum and Methodology

In order for students to acquire the abilities listed in the diploma policy in a step-by-step manner, the curriculum of the Department of Clothing consists of lectures, experiments, practical training, seminars and general seminars, and graduation theses in accordance with the following curriculum policy. It is designed to enable students to study from basic subjects to specialized subjects in stages. In addition, a course system (Fashion Science Course, Fashion Art Course, and Fashion Design Course) are established to guide students in their course completion. Specialized subjects necessary to obtain qualifications are also offered. The correspondence between the department's diploma policy and subjects will be presented as a curriculum tree.

Lectures

Lectures consisting of natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences are offered to enable students to gain a comprehensive understanding of a wide range of specialized fields in clothing science. Subjects taught by business people are also included to enable students to acquire knowledge of the industrial world.

Experiments and practical training

Experiments and practical training are offered to deepen students' understanding of lectures and to enable them to learn and apply expertise in clothing in a practical manner.

Seminars and general seminars

Seminars are offered in the third and fourth years to learn methods and knowledge in more specialized fields and to cultivate the ability to clarify issues while communicating with others.

Graduation thesis

Students work on their graduation thesis in the fourth year as the culmination of their four-year studies. They are required to find and explore an issue on their own, summarize it into an academic paper, and present the results to a third party.

Subjects for Qualifications

Specialized subjects for acquiring the first-degree Textiles Advisor certification are offered. Extracurricular courses are also offered for acquiring Textiles Evaluation Specialist (TES) certification, which is essential in the textile and fashion industry. In addition, subjects are offered that are necessary for obtaining the Class I teaching license for junior high and high schools (home economics), and librarian, school library teacher-librarian and museum curator qualifications.

Subjects for the achievement of learning outcomes

  • DP 1: Basic/specialized lectures in the department common field and the fields of materials, modeling, clothing environment, organizing and dyeing, aesthetics and consumption.
  • DP 2: Experiment and practical training subjects in the department common field and the fields of materials, modeling, clothing environment, and organizing and dyeing.
  • DP 3: Clothing Culture Seminar I & II, Clothing Science Seminar, General Seminar in Clothing Science and Graduation Thesis.
  • DP 4: Specialized subjects for acquiring the first-degree Textiles Advisor certification and subjects that are necessary for obtaining the Class I teaching license for junior high and high schools (home economics), etc.

Admission Policy

The Department of Clothing comprehensively explores, from scientific and cultural perspectives, what clothing should be in accordance with the times in our rapidly changing modern living environment. By creating clothing that contributes to the improvement of human life, the department aims to cultivate people who can play an active role in a variety of fields such as the textile and fashion industry, and contribute to society.
The department seeks the following types of students.

The types of students the department is seeking:

  • Students who try to understand the phenomena related to clothing in a comprehensive manner.
  • Students who are willing to learn about clothing from multifaceted perspectives, acquire knowledge that is useful for human life, think independently, and make proposals to society.
  • Students who work hard in everything they do and have a desire to improve themselves.
  • Students who wish to equip themselves with a wide range of knowledge and enrich their lives with clothing.
  • Students who can express their thoughts in writing or orally, and actively communicate with others.
  • Students who want to contribute to society as a specialist in the field of clothing.

Academic skills to be mastered by the high school level:

  • Basic academic skills in science, mathematics, Japanese and English.
  • Basic logical thinking ability and expressive ability to summarize their own thoughts and share them correctly with others.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with others.

Based on the following basic policy, an entrance examination is conducted to judge whether applicants have acquired the above academic skills.

  1. General entrance examination

    In the general entrance examination, it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic knowledge in the subjects required for each entrance examination category, also taking into account their logical thinking ability.

    • General entrance examination (individual examination)
      In a written examination, it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic knowledge of (i) a Foreign Language (English) and (ii) one subject from Japanese, Mathematics or Science, also taking into account their logical thinking ability.
    • General entrance examination (using an external English examination)
      The English external examination is used to judge whether applicants have a well-balanced and sufficient mastery of the four skills of English. In a written examination, it will also be judged whether applicants have acquired basic knowledge of two subjects from Japanese, Mathematics and Science, also taking into account their logical thinking ability.
    • General entrance examination (1st round examination (three-subject type or four-subject type) using the Common Test for University Admissions).
      Using the results of the Common Test for University Admissions ((i) Foreign Language (English), (ii) either of Japanese or Mathematics and (iii) Science), it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic knowledge and understanding in each subject, also taking into account their logical thinking ability.
    • General entrance examination (1st round examination (five-subject type) using the Common Test for University Admissions)
      Using the results of the Common Test for University Admissions ((i) a Foreign Language (English), (ii) Japanese, (iii) ONE subject from Mathematics and (iv) TWO subjects from Geography/History, Civics, Science and Information), it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic knowledge and understanding in each subject, also taking into account their logical thinking ability.
    • General entrance examination (2nd round examination using the Common Test for University Admissions)
      The same policy is applied as that for the 1st round examination (three-subject type or four-subject type) using the Common Test for University Admissions.
  2. Comprehensive entrance examination

    The comprehensive entrance examination consists of the first round and the second round for those who pass the first round. In the first round of the entrance examination, (i) applicants’ academic efforts at high school, etc., (ii) the basic knowledge and skills that they should have acquired by the end of high school, and (iii) their ability to think logically and express themselves will be evaluated by using the application form and a task common to all departments. In the second round, written and oral examinations will be conducted to comprehensively examine applicants’ acquisition of basic knowledge related to clothing, their volition to study, ability to express their thoughts, and communication skills and cooperativeness.

  3. Entrance examination by recommendation

    Applicants recommended by the principal of a high school, etc. will be comprehensively judged to have basic knowledge, volition to study, logical thinking, judgment, and expressive abilities, communication skills, and attitude to learn actively and collaboratively with diverse people.

    • Entrance examination by recommendation (from Senior High School affiliated with JWU)
      Applicants recommended by the principal of the Senior High School affiliated with JWU will be comprehensively judged based on the application documents and interview.
    • Entrance examination by recommendation (from designated schools/partner schools)
      Applicants recommended by the principal of the high school designated by the department (designated school/partner school) will be comprehensively judged based on the application documents and oral examination.
    • Entrance examination by recommendation (general recommendation)
      Applicants recommended by the principal of a high school, etc. will be comprehensively judged through the review of application documents including a task common to all departments, an essay, and an oral examination.
  4. International students

    Applicants will be judged on whether they have basic academic skills through the examination of two subjects (“Japan as a Foreign Language” and “Japan and the World”) in the Examination for Japanese University Admission (EJU) administered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). In addition, the application documents including a department-specific task and an oral examination will be used to comprehensively judge their volition to study, initiative, Japanese language ability, communication skills, ability to participate in discussion with others, and basic knowledge.

  5. Transfer and bachelor's admission

    For those who have graduated from universities, junior colleges, and technical colleges (including prospective graduates), and those who are currently enrolled in other universities, the review of application documents and performance in the designated English examinations will be reviewed. In addition, essay and oral examinations related to clothing will be conducted to comprehensively judge their basic knowledge, volition to study, ability to think, judge, express, and communicate, and attitude toward learning actively and collaboratively with diverse people.
