Three Policies of the Department of Transcultural Studies (from the 2024 academic year)

Diploma Policy

The Faculty of Transcultural Studies aims to nurture people who are able to grasp problems that exist in various regions and research fields, comprehend them based on international perspectives and academic knowledge, and become proactively involved in the creation of new cultures and societies by seeking solutions in cooperation with others. To this end, the educational goal is to acquire the following abilities.

  • DP1: Students will be able to communicate their own experiences to the world and listen to the opinions of others in English. [University DP 2, 3, 4]
  • DP2: Students will be able to understand cultures from multifaceted perspectives through English, German, French, Chinese, and Korean. [University DP 1, 3, 4]
  • DP3: Students will be able to utilize ICT for communication and expression. [University DP 1, 2]
  • DP 4: Students will be able to distinguish between the opinions of others and their own, construct their own opinions logically, and communicate them to the world in a meaningful way. [University DP 2, 4]
  • DP 5: Students will be able to acquire a broad and specialized knowledge of regional and artistic culture and understand basic ideas about cultural diversity. [University DP 1, 3]
  • DP 6: Students will be able to grasp practical issues in various cultures, regions, industries, and fields from an experiential perspective and clarify the significance of the issues to share with others. [University DP 2, 3, 4]
  • DP 7: Students will be able to relate practical problems to broad and specialized knowledge and organize them into precise questions that can be shared with others. [University DP 1, 2]
  • DP 8: Students will be able to make a detailed plan to work towards solving questions. [University DP 4, 5]
  • DP 9: Students will be able to give back to the world at large the results of practical efforts in a persuasive style of expression using precise language and ICT, thereby contributing with expertise to the creation of a new culture. [University DP 2, 4]

Curriculum Policy

  • Specialized subjects are offered in order for students to study the cultures of various regions and fields.
  • In order to approach the study of international culture as a multidisciplinary field, theoretical and practical introductory subjects are offered, and short-term study abroad programs as "transboundary experiences" are made compulsory.
  • Academic training subjects are offered in order for students to acquire the logical thinking, skills, ICT and communication abilities necessary for university study, as well as the basic methodologies of international cultural studies.
  • The “Practical Program” is offered as a practical subject designed for students to identify culturally relevant issues outside the classroom, whether overseas or in Japan, and acquire the ability to address them in cooperation with others. Together with subjects on communicating the results of the program in a foreign language, the program is a practical training subject.
  • The graduation research is compulsory as the culmination of four years of study.

Admission Policy

The Department of Transcultural Studies is a department that studies "international culture” encompassing all facets of "regional culture" and "artistic culture.” The department aims to nurture people who are able to grasp problems that exist in various regions and research fields around the world, comprehend them based on international perspectives and academic knowledge, and become proactively involved in the creation of new cultures and societies by seeking solutions in cooperation with others.
The department seeks the following types of students.

The types of students the department is seeking

  • Students who want to acquire "transboundary" perspectives by understanding intertwined cultures both in Japan and abroad from multiple, logical, and international points of view, based on a mastery of a variety of languages. (Knowledge and skills)
  • Students who want to acquire the logical thinking ability, skills, and communication capabilities necessary to put into words the results of practical efforts and to disseminate them also using ICT. (Thinking, judgment and expression capabilities, etc.)
  • Students who want to study cultural issues in the social field in cooperation with others by combining practical knowledge acquired through practical and hands-on programs outside the classroom with specialized knowledge. (Attitude toward active learning)

Academic skills to be mastered by the high school level

  • Appropriate proficiency in foreign and Japanese languages
  • Sufficient basic academic skills in geography/history and mathematics
  • The basic ability to think logically and to express one's thoughts in a coherent and correct manner.
  • The ability to communicate with others and work collaboratively.

Based on the following basic policy, an entrance examination is conducted to judge whether applicants have acquired the above academic skills.

  1. General entrance examination

    In the general entrance examination, it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic knowledge in the subjects required for each entrance examination category, taking into account their logical thinking and expressive abilities.

    • General entrance examination (individual examination)
      In a written examination, it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic knowledge of (i) Japanese, (ii) a Foreign Language (English) and (iii) either Geography/History or Mathematics, taking into account their logical thinking and expressive abilities.
    • General entrance examination (using an external English examination)
      The English external examination is used to judge whether applicants have a well-balanced and sufficient mastery of the four skills of English. In a written examination, it will also be judged whether applicants have acquired basic knowledge of (i) Japanese and (ii) either Geography/History or Mathematics, taking into account their logical thinking and expressive abilities.
    • General entrance examination (1st round examination (three-subject type or four-subject type) using the Common Test for University Admissions).
      Using the results of the Common Test for University Admissions ((i) Japanese, (ii) Foreign Languages and (iii) ONE subject from Geography/History, Civics and Mathematics), it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic knowledge in each subject and the logical thinking and expressive abilities.
    • General entrance examination (1st round examination (five-subject type) using the Common Test for University Admissions)
      Using the results of the Common Test for University Admissions ((i) Japanese, (ii) a Foreign Language, (iii) ONE subject from Geography/History and Civics, (iv) ONE subject from Mathematics, (v) ONE subject from Science and Information), it will be judged whether applicants have acquired basic knowledge in each subject and logical thinking and expressive abilities.
    • General entrance examination (2nd round examination using the Common Test for University Admissions)
      The same policy is applied as that for the 1st round examination (three-subject type or four-subject type) using the Common Test for University Admissions.
  2. Comprehensive entrance examination

    In the first round of the entrance examination, the applicant's efforts at high school, etc. Will be reviewed by using the application form to comprehensively judge the applicant's basic knowledge and skills, initiative, and the cooperativeness that the applicant should have acquired by the end of high school, etc. Their independence and logical thinking and expressive abilities will be judged through a task common to all departments. In the second round, applicants will be evaluated on their ability to think logically, make judgments, and express themselves on various international cultural issues in an essay. The presentation and Q&A session will be also used to judge communication skills and the ability to participate in discussions with others. Through the above review and examination, a comprehensive judgment will be made.

  3. Entrance examination by recommendation

    Applicants recommended by the principal of a high school, etc. will be judged to have the basic academic skills that should have been acquired by the end of high school. In addition, through the review of application documents and an interview (oral examination), applicants' motivation for study and research, the ability to express themselves, communication skills, and cooperativeness will be comprehensively judged.

    • Entrance examination by recommendation (from Senior High School affiliated with JWU)
      Applicants recommended by the principal of the Senior High School affiliated with JWU will be comprehensively judged based on the application documents and interview.
    • Entrance examination by recommendation (from designated schools/partner schools)
      Applicants recommended by the principal of the high school designated by the department (designated school/partner school) will be comprehensively judged based on the application documents and oral examination.
  4. International students

    Applicants will be judged on whether they have sufficient basic academic skills through the examination of two subjects (“Japan as a Foreign Language” and “Japan and the World”) of the Examination for Japanese University Admission (EJU). The application documents and oral examination will be used to judge their volition to study, initiative, Japanese language ability, communication skills, ability to participate in discussion with others, and basic knowledge of international culture.

  5. Transfer and bachelor's admission

    For those who have graduated from universities, junior colleges, and technical colleges (including prospective graduates), and those who are currently enrolled in other universities, an essay examination will be conducted to judge whether they have logical thinking and expressive abilities, as well as specialized knowledge equivalent to the second or third year of university study. Through application documents and an oral examination, applicants will be judged comprehensively on their volition to study, initiative, communication skills, ability to participate in discussion with others, and sufficient knowledge of international culture.

  6. Working people

    For those who meet the application qualifications, an essay examination will be conducted to judge whether they have logical thinking and expressive abilities. Through application documents and an oral examination, applicants will be judged comprehensively on their volition to study, initiative, communication skills, ability to participate in discussion with others, and basic knowledge of international culture.
