Japan Women’s University focuses on the fostering of the qualities and abilities required in contemporary society, hones the skills and sensibility that serve as the foundations for the learning of students in the liberal arts sphere, and nurtures the creativity to build comfortable lifestyles and social values as well as a broadly cultured mind.
Integrated education from kindergarten through to university
The integrated education offered from kindergarten through to university is carefully designed to help pupils and students grow step-by-step, and pursue the joy of learning. In the course of this integrated education JWU emphasizes not only on academic learning but also on individual discovery and excitement, fostering an independent and enthusiastic attitude among students towards their own studies.
The joy of knowing, understanding and expression
One of the objectives of integrated education is to provide students with experiences in “the joy of knowing (impressions)”, “the joy of understanding (structure)”, and “the joy of expression (presentation).” In addition to deepening knowledge and understanding, it is considered important to foster the skills that enable that knowledge and understanding to be communicated in words and expressions. Through this, instead of the students learning in a merely passive manner, they become able to independently tackle their studies as active knowledge builders.
Honing curiosity and sensibility
Curiosity and sensibility are highly valued at JWU, and an educational environment for fostering them is provided. In particular, through the study of art, music, literature, history and culture, students encounter varied cultures and arts, enhancing their sensibility and stimulating their curiosity. In this way, the students are equipped with the creativity and flexible thinking abilities required in future leadership.

Fostering sensitivity (Design and Art Workshop)
Under the instruction of JWU Professor Emeritus Yohei Nishimura the pupils spontaneously create their colorful works. Their ability to express themselves is fostered and they learn the pleasure of self-expression. The ability of the pupils to freely express what bubbles up inside of them when faced with a blank canvas links in with the creation of the groundwork for learning through integrated education in the future.
